The Gen Ys and money

Unlike the generation before them, millennials (also known as Generation Y), don’t much believe in delaying gratification. Gone were the days when people thought they’d save and slog in youth to be able to afford luxuries in retirement. The message now is different: I am only young once so I want to maximise my youth.

But living it up takes some serious funds and amidst chants of YOLO (You Only Live Once), globe-trekking and partying; many millennials don’t stop to save for the future.

How can you; when there are so many distractions that require your money?

Without glorifying the practices of the Baby Boomers and Generation X, saving early has its benefits. Here are reasons why your 20s is the most important time to save money.

The Time Value of Money

There’s little arguing that the value of money does depreciate over time. Think about it; RM10 today can buy you a lot less than it could 10 years ago. And 50 years ago, it would have been a luxurious sum! But thinking this is a good reason to use up all your cash now is flawed. When your money is cleverly invested, the interest rate can make up for the depreciation. The earlier you save also gives you more time to earn interest on the same sum as opposed to starting later.

Again, do the math. RM50 saved in your 20s gives you 10 years’ worth of interest over RM50 saved in your 30s. Isn’t that a good enough reason to start now?
